Study of Mixtures in the Modern ChemistryA study of mixtures in the modern chemistry or the history of chemistry teaches us that it is made up of one or more elements and that the elements are chemically defined. One may also learn to make various mixtures that are then used to formulate the elements in a specific mixture. The mixtures are then divided into the various phases that go into preparing an element component to function in a mixture.A mixture can be a simple chemical mixture where nothing is added. This phase will be referred to as a simple phase of a compound. This chemical combination will become mixtures by adding other substances. These substances will be known as a compound. Another category of mixtures is the mixture of mixtures.One of the most basic studies of mixtures in mixtures chemistry is the study of chemical equilibrium. The study of chemical equilibrium helps us to predict the behavior of two chemicals that are mixed together in a mixture to produce a desire d final product. When two different elements are mixed together the mixture becomes a compound. A compound will then turn into a mixture that can then be broken down into a compound and into a mixture.Chemical reactions in mixtures teach us about how a mixture changes its chemical properties and the rate at which it changes. For example, if the temperatures in a mixture reach a certain point, a reaction will take place. The product of this reaction will be changed into a new state of matter that has no contact with the previous state of matter. When a chemical reaction takes place in a mixture, it forms a covalent bond between the two substances that are reactants. This is also called ionization.Mixtures in mixtures chemistry will also teach us about the movement of atoms in a mixture. If two different atoms are mixed together, the changes that occur in the mass of the atoms are not specific to the changing of a single atom. In this manner we can learn about different mixtures and h ow they vary in the chemical properties of their compounds.Mixtures in mixtures chemistry have many uses in chemical engineering. These applications include things such as creating and shaping compounds that can react with one another to form molecules that can bond. The mixtures used in these applications are called polymer composites and they are used to create some of the most important parts of spacecraft systems.Mixtures in mixtures chemistry will also be useful in the way that they help us to predict what changes in the state of matter in a mixture will take place. These predictions will allow us to develop materials that will change the state of matter in the mixture to a desired state. Repellent at Night to Avoid the Bite (Precautions about West Nile Virus Breakouts) fightthebitecolorado.com West Nile Virus West Nile virus has had a recent breakout in Massachusetts causing an added necessity for safety precautions. When you go out this upcoming weekend make sure you bring along your bug spray because this virus can be deadly. After local schools canceled evening events and my own college sent out warnings, I decided to do a little research about the virus. West Nile virus was first identified in 1937 in Uganda in eastern Africa. This disease, transmitted by mosquitos, can produce mild to serious symptoms. Because West Nile is a type of flavivirus, it is part of an extremely dangerous group of RNA viruses. In this family are viruses which cause diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and Japanese encaphilitis. It was first discovered in the United States in the summer of 1999 in New York. However, as of September 2012, a total of 2,636 cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 118 deaths, have been reported to the Center for Disease Control.  Virus symptoms can vary as I said previously. These symptoms can range from headaches to stiff neck to muscle weakness. Most people infected with West Nile virus do not show symptoms; however, about 20 percent will show symptoms. Less than 1 percent of infected patients will show serious symptoms, signifying a neurological infection. Full lists of symptoms can be found on websites such as the Center for Disease Control and PubMed Health. It is important that you know how to protect yourself from this threat. Bug spray containing DEET is your best bet when it comes to repelling mosquitos. It is also a good idea to stay away from areas of still water during dusk, dawn and early evening hours. Mosquitos breed in still water so many researchers suggest changing or emptying areas such as bird baths, pools and water gardens if West Nile infested mosquitos are at high capacity in your surroundings. Also, wear long sleeve and pant layers when outside for long amounts of time, especially around still water or in late evening hours. Certain factors will increase the risk of West Nile virus being more serious in your body if you contract it. These factors include age, immune health and pregnancy. If you are above the age of 50, you have a heightened risk. This factor also applies to newborns and infants. If you suffer from HIV or another immune deficiency disease, your change of having a serious case of West Nile is also increased. Finally, pregnant women have an extremely high risk factor and should take all precautions possible. Until next time, protect yourself from bugs because West Nile bites!

What Is a Sublevel in Chemistry?It is important to know what is a sublevel in chemistry. Not only will it help you out if you ever want to do organic chemistry, but also if you decide to take a chemistry course for students you know. This is especially true if you are interested in a career in chemistry and want to further your education in this field.What is a sublevel in chemistry? It is actually a very large level of a chemical formula, with the elements arranged in such a way that they make up a higher level. The trick is that the levels are not always arranged in the order they are listed in the book. There are a few examples of how this would work, so let's just take a look at one example. Here are the names for some of the higher levels of hydrochloric acid in this case.At the highest level, it is called H2, but this could be changed to H. Hydrochloric acid at the next level is called H3, but could be called something else too. The book calls it HCN, or 'hydrochloric nitric ac id,' which you can also rename. So, now we can see why we would want to know how these levels in this case are done. To figure out what is a sublevel in chemistry, you need to know what the general name of the chemical is, and the word that goes with it. For example, if you asked someone what is a hydrochloric acid, you would probably get something like 'HS'.It is important to understand the meaning of the words, so you can understand how they are used in the formula. As you probably know, there are actually four levels of hydrochloric acid, all with different names. HS stands for 'hydrochloric' (that is the general term for the elements) H- for hydrogen (the element with one proton in its nucleus), for carbon, and N for nitrogen. When a student reads about these four levels, they will get something like this.If you go back to the book, you will see that there are also four symbols that go with these four levels, and they are also called 'labels'. You will find them on the label of this type of acid, and it is referred to as HHC. If you do some research, you will find that H is what a person would say when he or she talks about this type of acid.Just remember that the level has been divided into four, and H is one of them. If you go to the fourth level, you will find that it is actually HN, which is the very highest level of the chemical. It is important to understand what is a sublevel in chemistry, as the chemicals are all very similar in their chemical makeup.Knowing what is a sublevel in chemistry can help you when you are taking a class. You can then determine how the level should be listed in the book, and then you can have a better understanding of what you are being taught.

Educational family field trips may include trips to historic parks, local farms, or a number of other local events that cater to this purpose for kids. The following are four educational family field trips that can get you and your family out of the house, and your bodies and minds working! Field Trip Idea #1: Museums You might start out with childrens museums that provide kid-centered activities and exhibits, but dont limit yourself to just those. Regular museums will often have some programming geared toward kids or have rooms that are especially kid-friendly; ask someone who works at the museum to point you to them, or do some research online before you go. Regular exhibits that dont necessarily target children can also provide a great learning experience with your guidance. The Loog Guitar Revolution Guitar Lessons for Kids Will Never be the Same ksurmacewicz As a music educator and performer, I’m always interested in learning about new products and tools that can help students succeed.   When I discovered the Loog Guitar, a 3-string interchangeable guitar designed with children in mind, I immediately took notice. I was excited to find out more about the Loog because I took guitar lessons when I was 8 years old, and it proved to be easier said than done. The guitar was added to the list of instruments that were uncomfortable for my tiny hands (which I thought would grow eventually, but never did â€" to this day, I still struggle to reach the octave on the piano!). I became discouraged and quit after about 6 months, and eventually took up the ukulele many years later â€" which has been much easier for me to maneuver but even now, the ¾ size guitar is problematic for me. Many of our TakeLessons instructors prefer not to teach guitar to young children for this very reason.  Now, with the Loog Guitar in the picture, instead of teachers having to focus on finding alternate fingerings and keeping a frustrated student focused on the difficult task of mastering an adult-sized instrument, they can focus on teaching the child to make music!   And isn’t that really what it’s all about? I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to interview Rafael Atijas, the creator of the Loog Guitar, who provided insight into how his concept came about and what the benefits will be for children who want to learn the guitar. ______________________________________________________________________________________ When did you realize that there was a need for a guitar made especially for kids? I saw my 6 year old niece trying to make music with one of those $30 guitars when I thought There has to be a better way. It was then that I realized that kids’ guitars are usually just cheap, scaled-downed replicas of classical guitars.   They are not really designed with kids’ needs, comfort or even safety in mind. Where does your knowledge of guitars come from? I studied guitar and was in different bands during high school and college (as was almost every other kid I knew). I was very much into rock music and at some point I just fell in love with guitars especially vintage electric guitars. What age group do you feel would benefit the most from the Loog Guitar? Time will tell, but I think kids ages 6 to 9 will be the ones that will get the most out of the Loog Guitar, since this is the guitar that allows them to build chords without the need to form complicated shapes with their little hands. Where did you get the idea to call it the “Loog?” It is my subtle but very meaningful homage to Andrew Loog Oldham, the first manager and producer of The Rolling Stones. I always found him to be a fascinating character (Im a rock nerd, as you can see) and back when I had a band, I had a chance to meet him and he was super kind to us. What types of learning materials are you planning on coming out with to assist with the learning process? We plan to include a manual on how to play with three strings, and we will also offer video tutorials on our website. What does this product mean for kids who have an interest in learning guitar? Kids will have a friendlier instrument that will stimulate them to make music and get creative with it. What I like about the Loog Guitar is that it works whether you already know how to play guitar or not. And that’s what I hope it means to kids who have an interest in learning guitar: a fun and easy way to play music. Anything else you wish to add? I am truly humbled by the response the Loog Guitar project got on Kickstarter (the website that helped raise the money to launch the product), and one of the things I like the most is that so many people from the education field have reached out to me and had very positive things to say about the Loog Guitar. The teacher had knowledge s/he was tasked to impart; the students must acquire that knowledge and demonstrate mastery through periodic exams.Since the 15th century, when the Aztecs implemented the first universal compulsory education system, learning has been treated as a one-size-fits-all proposition.If you are this age, you should be capable of understanding these concepts and performing those tasks.Early educational philosophies did not take into account socioeconomic differences, any particular ability or disability to learn on the students’ part, and certainly paid no mind to learning preferences - all factors which have been shown to impact a student's ability to learn.Gender was a factor in formulating educational standards, but only with regard to how much schooling female students would be exposed to and what subjects they would study.Male or female, conformity was the ord er of the day and if students could not adapt and learn, they were generally held to blame.So what if you couldn’t read, didn’t understand arithmetic and your writing was illegible? It was all your fault; you just weren’t working hard enough!This educational philosophy did not change significantly until the mid- to late-twentieth century, when great leaps were made in understanding how both the human brain works and how people absorb knowledge.Now we’re seeing a revolution in pedagogy, one that inevitably empowers students by addressing their multiple intelligences in a learning environment designed to encourage them to thrive.Certainly, these changes are a boon for students of every type; the onus is on the teachers to break away from the traditional model and embrace new teaching methods.How hard can it be?Superprof wades into the fray. No, they are fallible, just like any other human.Obviously, teachers have extensive knowledge of their subject matter.That doesn't mean that they are the absolute authority on it - unless they are well-published and have conducted extensive research into their particular field, as Carol Ann Tomlinson has (she is the authority on how to differentiate).Another popular misconception is that teachers impart kn owledge. If we accept the definition of 'impart' as 'pass on information', then in fact, that is exactly what teachers do.The misconception is the idea that the information the teacher communicates will be received, understood and assimilated to its fullest degree.The accepted proof that the transmission of knowledge from teacher to student has been successful is high marks on examinations.If an entire class scores particularly well on exams, that teacher is generally thought to be exceptional, regardless of any background information that might impact students’ efforts, such as working with a tutor and how much effort s/he put into mastering it outside of class.Differentiated InstructionPerhaps because of its relative newness as a teaching strategy, there is plenty of misconception about differentiation.It is individualised instruction: not true.Teachers would drive themselves mad trying to teach each of their 30+ students individually!Differentiated instruction does involve some individual attention but by no means would teachers be called on to work with each student one on one.Whole group learning is still very much a facet of differentiated learning, as are small groups â€" as long as group work is complemented by learning activities that promote mastery.Differentiated learning is student-led: not true.Students do not choose the curriculum or select topics â€" that remains the teacher’s function. However, students are accorded a measure of input on how they receive instruction and work with it.By no means are we suggesting anarchy in the classroom or that you cater to your students’ every whim. Students may propose ideas for work and learning activities but, ultimately, it is the teacher’s responsibility to exercise classroom management and determine students’ workload.Some education professionals read about differentiated instruction and think it must be a magic bullet to solve all of the problems inherent in our educational system.Unfortunatel y, that too is not true.Differentiating instruction is a step in the right direction on many levels but it does not provide an easy solution to the challenge of educating learners of all types.What, exactly, is differentiated instruction, then?Differentiated instruction is not a one-on-one teaching method! Source: Pixabay Credit: KmicicanThe PremiseWe all know that the traditional educator dispenses information and that students’ demonstrate mastery through homework assignments and periodic exams.We also know that summative assessment â€" exams at the end of a learning unit, a semester and indeed at the end of one’s primary and secondary stages of education are not necessarily the best indicators of student achievement.Differentiation of instruction calls for formative assessment, meaning that teachers maintain an ongoing evaluation of student performance that allows adapting learning materials to students’ potential.It sounds like a lot of work but, once you have gathered all of the background knowledge you need about your students â€" their learning style, their competencies and interests, it will be very easy to notice and record their progress.In a differentiated classroom, learning is facilitated â€" as opposed to students being taught.In effect, the traditional teaching model calls for students to essentially be passive in their learning.Differentiated instructional strategies require students to take an active part in their education â€" not just by completing assignments and sitting exams but by having a measure of input on how they learn and what work is required of them.Find out how deeply differentiated instruction impacts students' learning...The MethodsHistorically, teaching has been a one-way communication: Teacher talks, students listen and, hopefully, learn.How many of you have had a teacher who, when asked a question, directed you to read your textbook and find the answer yourself?The lecture style of teaching has its merits.
